Pretty Tech was an all girls co-op program that helped girls (ages 14-18) see themselves as engineers through tech skill development, actionable mentor-ship, creation of peer networks and placement in upward mobile careers within the tech industry.

Today, Pretty Tech is a unique, hands-on electronics workshop that appeals to girls natural sense of detail and design. Pretty Tech’s mission is to overcome under-representation in engineering by designing what we call “pretty technology” with the goal of inspiring girls to choose engineering as a future career. Students solder electronic components onto fun-shaped circuit boards. Pretty Tech currently designs each individual circuit board to release exciting new kits in the near future.

 the idea

We wanted to attract girls to the brand by choosing “feminine” colors with an edge. All of the branding should be attractive to a school aged girl.

the process

DZN was asked to re-design the original logo and build a brand that spoke to the potential audience. Once the logo was redesigned, icons, patterns, and supporting colors were chosen to compliment the brand and its story.

brand strategy

The tagline “Advancing Gender Diversity in Tech” was the basis of the strategy. Pretty Tech’s goal is to ensure that girls look at tech careers as an attainable goal. Catering the brand to girls makes the program in itself more attainable.

brand identity

DZN wanted to ensure that the logo and its colors were bright and eye catching.

logo design

We were tasked with re-designing a triangular based logo with the words “Pretty Tech” in the middle. We built on this idea by creating soldering lines as the triangular shape and placing “Pretty Tech” in the middle.

typography

The fonts GTek and Monstserrat were used on all digital and print materials.

color palette

Hot pink, navy blue, and various shades of purple helped bring this brand to life. At times, rose gold was also used.

icons

A girl and boy icon was designed to allow its students to see themselves int he branding. The additional icons were used for stickers, social media, and more.

social marketing

Instagram was the main platform for social marketing as the various schools kept special pretty tech pages. These pages used the Pretty Tech branding to advertise and showcase their work to other students and parents.

print design

Merch and print items were designed for student’s use. Bright color combinations to appeal to school-aged girls.

product design

Tinker kits & accessories were designed.

app design

Pretty Tech wanted an app designed for their Phone Repair Service in the the schools. The design was imaged for students to take orders bookings and arrange for pickup once repairs are done.

web design (2018)

The website was designed for the Co-op program for highschool students.

web design (2020)

This site was redesigned once the brand changed directions to selling soldering kits for children and school-aged kids.
